Women-Led Movements in the Time of COVID

Educate, activate, and celebrate fair trade successes

On the heels of their Chicago World Fair Trade event, Katherine Bissell Cordova and Andrea Dennis will share their insights and expertise about food justice, fashion, and fair trade in the time of coronavirus.

With constant changes in supply and demand across the country and the globe, women-led movements like Fair Trade are at the forefront of conversations that are driving changes to our supply chain, greater awareness of consumption and ethics, and gender equity in business.

These two inspiring women will share meaningful action items for supporting women, reducing environmental damage, and purchasing in more conscious ways. This is a discussion for all PWCC members whether joining for your individual interest or to enhance your organization’s culture and contribution in this space.

About the Presenters:

Katherine Bissell Córdova has served as Executive Director of Chicago Fair Trade since 2014, having worked many years in the social justice movement, working for human rights, immigrant

rights, and worker rights organizations. She has presented on community engagement in fair trade at the Fair Trade Federation and Fair Trade Campaigns’ national conferences.

Katherine got her start in fair trade by opening Greenheart, a fair trade shop, in Chicago in 2007. Prior to that, Katherine served as the Executive Director of ARISE Chicago, an organization that

partners with low-wage immigrant workers as they organize for improvements in the workplace, established a field office for GreenWood Alliance in Honduras, served as a human rights

defender in Guatemala with Peace Brigades International, and worked at the Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors for Torture in Chicago. Katherine served as Co-Chair of

Fair Trade Campaign’s National Fair Trade Towns’ Steering Committee. She is fluent in Spanish. She lives in Chicago with her two children, Sofia and Mateo.

Andrea Dennis serves as the Director of Environmental Education and Engagement at Friends of the Parks and is the Board Chair at Chicago Fair Trade, having spent over a decade as an organizer, fundraiser, and facilitator in the fields of cultural exchange, fair trade, service learning and sacred connection.

She has presented on fair trade at the Fair Trade Campaigns’ national conference and facilitated international Purpose Summits in Berlin and San Francisco.

She started her work in fair trade at Greenheart International where she helped launch their fair trade initiatives alongside managing their service learning programming and serving on the senior leadership team. Her approach is influenced by meditation, yoga, permaculture, and community organizing. Andrea is a published author in the anthology Purpose Rising, and previously served on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Social Enterprise Alliance.
