Building a Niche Business

After struggling with secondary infertility for three and a half years, I realized that there was one area of the infertility industry that was sorely lacking – a third-party advocate for intended parents.   During my infertility process, I had no one to turn to. The fertility agencies represent donors and surrogates, not the parents. The physicians can help you through the medical portion, but there wasn’t anyone to explain or facilitate the legal, financial and even the emotional situations that arise during the infertility process.  After 16 inseminations, four in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and an exhaustive and frustrating process, I successfully became pregnant and delivered twin boys, the best gifts of my life. It was then that I found my true business passion. I left my career in Venture Capital and began working in the industry as an egg donor and surrogate recruiter and subsequently, as an IVF Coordinator. It was this experience, combined with my persona ...Read the rest of entry »

Making Your Member Profile Work For You

Twice in the past month I have looked to the PWCC Membership Directory to refer business and twice I've been disappointed not to find what I'm looking for. Not because there probably isn't someone in PWCC who offers what I need (non-profit accounting help and car and home owner's insurance) but because I would have had to call pretty much every member who came up under those respective categories to see if they actually offered the specific service I am looking for. And that's just not going to happen. So if you haven't taken the time to update your Member Profile on the website, here's your call to action! Make it easy for other PWCC members to refer business to you by taking the following simple steps to maximize your membership: 1. Log in. Don't know how? Contact admin@pwcc.org for a login information refresher. Once you're logged in, you'll automatically be taken to your profile. 2. Complete your profile. Even if you can't figure out how to upload a picture (it was royal pain for me, but I made it ...Read the rest of entry »

Networking Tips

At the March luncheon featuring Kristin Steede from Biggest Loser fame, we started the lunch, as always, with introductions around the table. Julie Apointe did a great job facilitating our table discussion and asked us to offer our best networking tips. Here is the round up from our table with a few of my own thrown in: Be genuine Give first and it will come back to you Ask for what you want Follow up, follow up, follow up Don't get complacent. No matter where you are in your career, keep networking. Get out there - out of your comfort zone to network. Go with a friend if it works better for you. Get to know a network broker, or someone who works among many networks. Always have your business cards with you. Be willing to collaborate and affiliate. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated and make connections there. Join PWCC and volunteer on a committee - ok shameless plug but this is their blog!! What are your networking tips? Barbara Talisman, Vice President, Pursuant Ketchum has been a member ...Read the rest of entry »
