Caregiver Legislation

Caregiver Legislation

In May 2010, President Obama signed into law the Caregiver and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010.  I felt so strongly about it that I had contacted my Congressman, Mike Quigley, and Senators Durbin and Burris urging them to vote for this bill.

The legislation provides support to family caregivers of the most severely injured veterans.  It provides eligible caregivers of veterans with health care, training, counseling, support and a stipend.

The law also addresses other segments of the veterans' population, such as women veterans, veterans living in rural and remote regions of America, as well as Medal of Honor recipients, and other issues including suicide prevention and homelessness. You can find more information at the Veterans Administration: http://www1.va.gov/health/caregiver/help.asp
Here are some things that the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010 does, as listed on the white house blog:  http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/05/05/improving-health-care-veterans
  • Provides veterans’ caregivers with training, counseling, supportive services, and a living stipend; provides health care to the family caregivers of injured veterans under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA); requires independent oversight of the caregiver program;
  • Requires VA to report to Congress on its comprehensive assessment of the barriers in providing health care to the 1.8 million women veterans’ currently receiving VA health care and it requires VA to train its mental health providers in the treatment of military sexual trauma.  It also mandates that VA implement pilot programs to provide child care to women veterans receiving medical care and provide readjustment services to women veterans.
As always, please feel free to comment; I appreciate feedback.  You can also give us your caregiving tips, share your experiences, or ask questions.  I'll try to answer questions in future blogs.  My goal is to be relevant to you and your caregiving.
